We go to the hardware store and pick various sizes of large-headed bolts.  The threads are nice to grip with gloved hands and stay cool as they're taller than the tamper backs.  The heads are thick and hold a nice bit of heat, and with all the different sized we can pick what works for each specimen.  At about $0.15 each--no one freaks out if they are accidentally discarded.
