At our institution, our P&P's allow AP techs (our terminology for grossers that are not PA's) to be trained on more than biopsies. Their competencies should state exactly what specimens each person is allowed to gross beyond biopsies.
Until relatively recently, our histo techs made more than our AP techs. The AP techs are not histo techs, they are high complexity personnel with no certifications, that we trained on the job. If you have enough histo techs to gross, consider yourself lucky! We would be in dire straits if we had to staff the gross room with histo techs!
Thanks,
Bonnie

Subject: [Histonet] Grossing Histotechnician?
Hello! I was wondering if there are any Histotechnicians who are able to gross (Grossing Histotechnicians) who might be able to shed some light on what their job responsibilities entail? What types of specimens do Grossing Histotechs gross? Do they only gross simple cases (ex. GI biopsies) or some complex cases (ex. Gallbladder, appendix). Is there additional compensation for being a Grossing Histotech in comparison to just a Histotech? Or are Pathology Assistants (PAs) handling most of the gross?
Thank you!
