I'm going to try sectioning at higher temps today and I hope that it works. Thanks all for the suggestions.
We used to have a vibratome but the thing only worked right for certain kinds of samples. I don't see us getting another one since the occasion to use something like that happens very infrequently. Too bad.
Yes, the brains were fixed - treated with mercury and have a gray-green cast to them (wearing gloves). They were also sucrose cryoprotected.
