JOB TITLE: Histology Technician/ Bench Supervisor
JOB QUALIFICATIONS:
A. EDUCATION:
- Required: High school diploma or GED
- Required: A.S. degree in Science or Histology
- Desired: B.S. in Science
B. EXPERIENCE:
- Required: H.T and/or H.T.L. (ASCP), or equivalent experience and training. Previous experience as a technician.
- Desired: Two years of experience at an acute care hospital of more than 200 beds, or a reference lab
KEY PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Cross-train and share knowledge; assist in orienting others.
- Attends continuing education to meet licensure requirements.
- Performs Gross examination of small biopsies.
- Process tissue samples using a variety of processing methods.
- Embeds tissue correctly (minimum of 50 large or 30 small or multiple blocks per hour
embedding time).
- Microtomy and are artifact-free and meet protocol (sections a minimum 50-70 blocks per shift).
- Staining procedures are accurate & precise
- Clerical tasks are correct and complete.
- Slides are correctly labeled. Initialed, color-coded slides are used and "levels" or other needed information is accurately transferred to the slides.
- Complete workload-recording sheets, daily.
- Performs Q/C and Q/A documentation as required
- Upkeep of logbooks.
- Ability and willingness to assume supervisory responsibility, in specific areas, if assigned.
- Meets deadlines. Organize work to meet established turn around times.
- Prioritizes tasks according to current departmental practices.
- Expedites "Rush" specimens. Integrates slide availability with current courier schedules.
- Equipment maintenance, housekeeping, supply inventory and stocking, replenishes routine reagents, out-dates expired ones, and leaves test “set-ups” in good condition for the next user.
