We also keep the empty containers. The empty containers are kept one week, placed in hazardous bags and labeled by grosser/date, the formalin is emptied, at time of grossing, into our Formalin refiltering system (Creative Waste Solutions) and the recovered formalin is used at the grossing bench to fix cassettes waiting for processing. This reduces the waste formalin needed to be hauled out of the lab.
