[Histonet] Silver staining /other methods to reveal axon sprouting/retraction following injury

Hi all
i read such figures in Cajal's books..I guess he is not using specific degenerative sliver staining, as Natua developed the method 50 years later.

I wonder anyone can send me the protocol for such kind of silver staining - there are so many ways of Golgi staining - to reveal post-injury changes of axons after transection, for example?

Also, any other comments on molecular approaches are welcome.
