Hi Tracey

We had exactly that problem with inconsistent slide temps and failure to 
heat on random pads.

Our local service technician said there was a manufacturing problem with all 
plates made during a certain time and that they all needed to be replaced 
worldwide.  We had our pad tray replaced about a month ago and not a problem 
since.  Perhaps you can check if your replacement tray was from the "new"

We have had on-going thermal slide pad issues with our XTs since they were 
in February. The slide tray assemblies have been replaced not once but twice 
and we are still having inconsistent
results with the temp verifier slides.  Has anyone experienced the same 
issues with this
