Unfortunately salaries in our field vary wildly, not just between areas in the country, but even between labs in a single county.
This is a "supply-demand" issue; offer a salary conmensurate to your needs and comparable to other salaries you are now paying, and let the applicant decide.
Specially think on those now working in your lab and what they are being paid. The least you want is to be confronted by a colleague being paid less than the "new-comer", it would not be fair.
