Hello Annette -
>From the perspective of a gastrointestinal pathologist, the more sections
that you can provide for review, the better for the patient - particularly
in pediatric patients.
At the University of Washington Gastrointestinal Pathology Laboratory, each
block would have two complete ribbons of tissue per slide, two slides per
block. This would result in about 60 to 120 sections per block for the
pathologist to review. The blocks were trimmed very close to the tissue and
standard 4 micron sections were ribboned, with ribbons placed about 5 mm
from one another on the slides.
While this is "overkill" for many standard adult GI cases, such as routine
tubular adenomas in adults, the degree of accuracy in inflammatory disorders
is impacted substantially by providing additional sections for review.
If you would like to contact me directly to discuss, I would be happy to
provide some literature about diagnostic accuracy and biopsy handling.
