All the places I have worked for had the IHC separate. And yes, there was a higher pay rate (usually $2 more per hour) and usually a different title. But these were high volume places with hundreds of IHCs per day so you had to have more dedicated people who would stay on top of that area with additional duties such as maintenance and control cutting.

Good Morning
To piggyback on this IHC lab question...
For those labs that DO have dedicated IHC staff...do they have a different title AND do they have a different payrate??
Thank you very much

A little historical perspective on this subject .........
When I started at Hartford Hospital back in July of 1978, I was hired to fill the position of "Immunopathology Technician".  The person who worked there previously left to get her PhD.  I was the only person in the Immunopathology Laboratory (IP), which was started by a pathologist who did renal pathology.  My main responsibility was triaging renal biopsy tissue for light microscopy, immunofluorescence (IF), and EM, then performing immunofluorescence stains on frozen tissue sections.  At the same time, the Electron Microscopy Laboratory had three full-time employees.  I did the first immunoperoxidase stains (that's what we called them back then) in 1980.  As IHC became more popular, we rotated Histology personnel through the IP lab for 2 months at a time.  That did not work out well, since someone would not be back in the IP lab for at least a year or longer, and things changed monthly (new antibodies, new detection systems, etc.).  Keep in mind that everything was done manually back then.  The pendulum eventually shifted, and we had three full-time people in the IP Lab and only one in EM.  Tragically, we lost our EM Director to a sudden death, and we ended up closing the lab because we couldn't find anyone to work in it.  I was privileged to train and work with so many outstanding colleagues during my 44-year career, some of whom left and took similar or supervisory positions elsewhere.
It is much easier to do IHC testing today since almost everything is automated.  Unfortunately, many people doing these important laboratory tests today do not fully understand the mechanics of the technology or the importance of specimen preanalytics which makes it difficult to troubleshoot when things don't work.

 Hello Listers,

Long time no see.

Question:  does your histology lab have IHC separate from Histology?

From my experience, IHC is separate.  It may be in the same space, but the techs are IHC SMEs

How about you?
