Evelyne Kokoskin at PublicHealthOntario asks:

>>We are looking at infectious agents in thin blood smears and how to
eliminate them before staining using fixation. Other than methanol, what
are other fixatives that could possibly be used for fixing thin films (
that would destroy infectious agents) and allow staining with Giemsa
stain.<<

By "destroying them" I suppose you mean rendering them non-infectious,
rather than removing them. I would think that the methanol in the Giemsa
stain would pretty well accomplish that. But you'd need to find out what
the regulatory agencies in Canada have decided.
