Best's carmine and mucicarmine are very different stains. Mucicarmine is carminic acid mordanted with aluminum in acid solution. It stains mucus but not glycogen. Best's carmine is an ammoniated carminic acid, probably an amine at one end and an amide at the other. It is very basic. It is a selective stain for glycogen. It stains glycogen lightly, but the stain is permanent in xylene-soluble resin.

Hello,
Any tips on doing Best Carmine on Frozen sections without water. Can we use mucicarmine solution to pick up glycogen in heart muscle?
Thank u,
Kiran
