I think one of the most important things to have a back-up for is a processor.

If you use anything often enough, it is wise to have a back-up, if possible. Microtomes, and especially cryostats, tend to malfunction without warning and can leave you "stranded". We have a back-up that isn't ours, but we have access to it.  That's another option.  Make friends with someone else who has one and strike an arrangement with them.
