I would also like to add that sometimes the amount of emails gets overwhelming to some. Especially when certain subjects get a bit heated. They can go to digest format, but sometimes even that gets overwhelming, especially when you have nested digests into digests. That one eventually tests my patience as well.

It isn't unusual to unsubscribe from email lists by hitting reply and putting unsubscribe in the subject or body of the mail. So these folks are just doing what they've always done.
