Our client labs have always used the barcode and the case id as the identifiers and we've never heard of a problem.  This allows us to print special instructions on the cassette, which everyone finds helpful later in the workflow.

PS:  it also allows us to print the case id in a bigger font as well and that in itself may be the biggest 'bang for the buck'.
