You can remove melanin but I would think that would have an adverse effect
on IHC for sure, as Linda suggests the best bet for IHC is to use ap/red or
aec with hrp instead of DAB. Jim Burchette has a giemsa stain he does on
skin which colors the melanin green instead of brown but I was not able to
get it to work myself.

Are you talking about staining with H&E, special stains or immunos? If
its to stain with IHC you can use a chromogen other than DAB for your
detection kit.
