We had this problem at one time and found that the tissue was being left out to dry during grossing, and the result was that the sections were actually cutting thicker due to difficulty sectioning.  Is this a possibility for you?  The drying out could also happen at the physicians office as well, if they lay them out on gauze and then put them in formalin.  The biopsies dry out quickly due to their size.
