Kathleen,
Controls: Mucin Control (Appendix/umbilical cord). Also include
kidney and skin.
A second slide should be left in water until step 6 (to detect
endogenous iron) Alcian Blue (pH 2.5) can be run in parallel.
Tickoo et al (1998 Am J Surg Pathol 22(4): 419-424) recommend that when
staining a suggested chromophobe renal cell carcinoma, a block
containing normal renal cortex, along with the tumour, be selected.
Slides are acceptable for interpretation only if the glomerular
mesangium stained distinctly and the tubular epithelium showed no
staining.
