The dyes in Giemsa are essentially pH indicators, so a bluish hue is due to an alkaline  (high pH) environment.
If you keep formalin over a layer of calcium carbonate that will prevent the formation of formic acid (oxidation of the formaldehyde), BUT once you take the formalin out of that container and use it to fix tissues, the neutralizing effect will have disappeared and the acidification of the formalin is again an issue.
