Amonia water has been described as affecting the H&E staining. Ammonia water on the faced off block is less helpful than a gentle soaking in arm water, or rubbing the surface with a gauze impregnated in mineral oil.
   
  Heating the slides don't UNLESS they are not completely drained (absolutely no water between the section and the slide) before heating them.
