I concur with Paul on this one...sounds like a fixation problem.

P.S. Of course, even with a faster penetrating fixative like formalin, the same artifact can be produced simply by insufficient time in the fixative to allow full penetration.  Are you seeing this artifact mostly in larger tissue sections?
