A circulating bath is the best solution to keeping any liquid temperature within narrow limits because the liquid is circulated through a chiller (or heater, depending of the temperature you want to maintain) and compensate for the thermal variations caused by the environment on a still liquid.

We purchased a vibratome which comes with a buffer ice tray. Does this
serve the same purpose as the circulating bath (to keep the buffer cold)?
Why would one need a circulating bath?
