Col. Travis, the Texian commander at the Alamo, insisted that he was
fighting only for the restoration of constitutional government in Mexico
(i.e. the Constitution of 1824). After his death, the war became a war for
independence.
[This is similar to the U.S. and Haitian wars of independence, which started
out as wars to secure constitutional rights and became wars of independence
only when the colonial power escalated its efforts to deny those rights.]
