But surely you should write on the frosted end pointing south, so you don't
contaminate the slide and then label on the other end? That way you can be
sure that the writing 'down south' matches the label 'up north' (or is it
the other way round)? If you stuck the label over the writing then how can
the Pathologist be sure it is the correct slide? Using a mirror or X-Ray
vision?

Yes - I'm sure that is the reason. Otherwise, it would make more sense to do
it upside down. Of course since there are usually 2 labelling events, pencil
then paper label, there is no reason why the first shouldn't be upside down
and the second, done on the stained and coverslipped slide, the right way up
(for storage).
How do you cope with reading labels if your slides are stored with upside
down writing John?
Or is upside-down reading just another skill you have?

We write the numbers  with the frosted end pointing north, since that's the 
way we file them standing up, the number easily to be read...
