[Histonet] Saving Levels

We cut 10 slides on "diagnostic" biopsies - livers, lungs, etc that are CT guided. We do H&E on #5 - then the pathologists can choose additional H&Es, specials, or immunos as necessary.

We also cut 3 extras on prostates for immunos if necessary.

With the price of charged slides it takes gritted teeth to do this and discard slides, but we do want to save all the tissue we can for diagnosis. Sometimes we have more antibodies than extra slides and have to cut additional tissue.

Cheers! j:>)

Our lab will cut "Spares" if they are requested. What we do is cut 1 level,
then 3-4 spares and then another level. The spares we cut are saved for 3-4
days. If no other requests are made for them one is stained H & E and the
others disposed of. Sometimes it seems such a waste of slides since we
usually end up throwing away about a dozen slides a week, but for patient
care it acts as insurance.
