   Hi Linda,

I have cut and stained several nails including horse hoof. Before
processing place the nail in 10% amonia water until bendable or
rubbery (approx. 2 hr to overnight depending on thickness). Fix in
formalin and process as usual. For cutting, if the nail is still
hard, trim in and soak in amonia water again for 5 to 10 minutes. To
stick the sections to a slide I use Plus Charged Slides and 5 % Elmers
Glue in a coplin. Dip the slides in the glue and pick up the
sections. Allow to dry, deparafinize and stain. Amonia takes the
keratin out of the nail and leaves it rubbery.

   good luck,

   Thom Jensen
