Ben - Years ago, when Zenker's was used by everyone, we used to put 
alcoholic iodine as the first station on the processor (after formalin).  
Then we added a sodium thiosulfate rinse to the stain routine.  That took an 
extra minute or 2.   You might try that.  Cheryl
