Hi Mark,
We use
5g Haematoxylin
100g Ammonium Alum
50ml Ethyl alcohol
1000ml Distilled water
0.37g Sodium iodate
  and when cool we add 40ml glacial acetic acid.  So it is acidified.

We use weak acid alcohol to differentiate the slides, followed by an 
alcoholic eosin Y.
