[Histonet] Periodic acid in immunohistochemistry

I have two protocols for my antibody, 15F6. One which uses 1% periodic acid
(and then 1% formic acid) and one which does not have this step.

Does anyone know what the periodic acid does in this technique please, and
whether it is necessary to include it?

I have been trying this technique without success this week hence searching
the internet for an alternative protocol.
