Check to see if the submitting department is using any type of cautery instrument in the collecting process. Are the biopsies placed IMMEDIATELY into the fixative? Eith of these circumstances will produce an artifact on your slides.

For the past couple of years we have been getting a
burned artifact in our biopsies. The pathologist have
said that on the slides the nucleus look smudged or
burned. It is mostly on the small bxs, but we have
seen it on larger specimens also. We have bought a
new tissue processor, and a new slide stainer thinking
that might be the problem. We are still seeing the
artifact. Is there anybody that might can tell us
what is causing the problem? We have tried everything
we can think of.
