In an open processor the tissue basket moves and the
reagents are stationary (the old Autotechnicon or the
Ultra Technicon). A closed processor is where the
tissue is placed in a sealed tank or reservoir and the
reagents are pumped in to them. (VIP, or the like).
Sheehan's book "Theory & Practice of Histotechnology"
has a whole chapter dedicated to this.
