Both. Fingers to lift one end of the ribbon as I cut it and then with the other hand I use a small brush to lift the other end from the microtome. Allows me to stretch and smooth the ribbon as I lay it out on the water bath.
Some others here us forceps, picks, etc.

Morning all!
I need some quick responses to this question: do you use your fingers or an instrument of some sort to pull your paraffin ribbons off the block when sectioning? For those that do not use their fingers, what do you use? If forceps, are these the typical lab forceps or a special type?
