Compensation for techs who can and do gross is 12% higher than
non-grossing techs.
As far as "processing"....We added that to our grossing manual, but if
you are held to CLIA standards it is irrelevant. In my opinion, most
labs will be better served to follow the guidelines of well documented
training, direct or indirect supervision, a comprehensive list of what
specimens can be grossed in by personnel other than pathologists, and
yearly evaluation of all employees who gross or "process".
There is a great deal of added responsibility here and I believe we need
to do everything we can to protect the techs who do it.
