I put the clothing between two paper towels, iron and the towels absorbs the
paraffin, works on carpet two even with one towel on top, for when candle
wax is spilled.

This actually does work, I've tried it. I have heard that you can put a
piece of gauze (or an old, thinning kitchen towl) between the paper and the
cloth to help to wick up the hot parrafin as well, but I haven't tried this
yet.
Good luck
