Hi Christine:
Picric acid is only dangerous if allowed to dry out and then
subjected to severe shock or high temperatures (well above the boiling
point of water). Much of the picric acid paranoia is spread by
unsubstantiated rumors. Still, if you don't want it in your lab, try a
formalin+alcohol+acetic acid mixture or Bouin's (I think you can buy
Bouin's made up or sat. aqueous picric acid, which minimizes the risks).
You could also ask your local lab safety police to store a small
quantity of picric acid for you.
