To measure the specific gravity without a hydrometer:
1. Weigh a container that will take just over 10 mL to 4 decimal places.
2. Using a volumetric pipette, place 10 mL of the methanol into the
container.
3. Weigh it again to 4 decimal places.
4. Subtract the weight of the empty container from the weight with the
methanol to get the weight of 10 mL methanol.
5. Divide the weight of the methanol by 10 (move 1 decimal place to the
left).
6. That is the specific gravity of the methanol. Compare it to a chart
of concentrations.
